The most successful gymnast of her time had shown her fallibility on the biggest stage of all, and as she completed a history-making comeback at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships last week, she completed refashioning those expectations of success. Records as well as medals announced Biles’ return to the pinnacle of the sport in Antwerp, Belgium. Five months ago, Biles didn’t think she’d ever compete again, she said on X, formerly known as Twitter. Nevertheless, ghosts from Tokyo still lingered at the world championships, she said afterwards, memories bubbling to the surface and making her “nervous” for the team finals on Wednesday. CNN —Simone Biles won her fourth gold medal of the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Sunday, finishing first in the floor exercise, as she completes her first international competition since her two-year break from gymnastics. The gold in floor is Biles’ 23rd world championship gold medal and was her second of the day, having won the beam competition in Antwerp, Belgium. CNN —A day after winning a sixth all-around title to become the most decorated gymnast in history, Simone Biles added to her extraordinary medal collection with a silver in the vault at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Saturday. Needing to regain her composure immediately for her second vault, Biles went on to score an impressive 14.666 for an average score of 14.549. Kaylia Nemour of Algeria won silver, while the USA’s Shilese Jones took bronze. On Friday, Biles surpassed Belarusian Vitaly Scherbo’s record of 33 overall medals across both the Olympics and the world championships with a record sixth all-around gold. Biles has now earned 28 career medals (21 gold, four silver, three bronze) at the world championships, which is an all-time record.

The U.S. women have won gold in the team event at every world championship that included a team competition since 2011. Biles now has 26 world championship medals, 20 of them gold, to go with her seven Olympic medals, including the 2016 Olympic title. Biles capped off a successful night for the U.S team with a spectacular floor routine rewarded by a 15.166.

The American won the first of her five world all-around titles in 2013 at the age of 16 in Antwerp and has since become a household name after winning a record 25 worlds medals -- which includes a jaw-dropping 19 golds. At 26, she will become not only the oldest American woman to compete at the worlds in over half a century but also the first woman to represent the U.S. at six artistic world championships when it kicks off on Saturday. The U.S., Britain and Canada's women secured team quota spots last year while China, Japan and Britain secured men's quotas. While the U.S. men are yet to secure qualification, the women are overwhelming favourites for top spot but Biles will have competition for the individual all-round gold. The 2022 all-around champion Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, Olympic silver medallist in Tokyo, is a serious contender as is Biles's 21-year-old compatriot Shilese Jones, who took the silver at the worlds last year.

CNN —Four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles said it “broke my heart” to see a young Black girl passed over for a medal at a gymnastics ceremony in Ireland, footage of which has gone viral. “It broke my heart to see, so I sent her a little video. “A written apology provided by the identified individual has since been issued to the competitor and her family,” the statement said. From Pakistan to Ethiopia they can see this was wrong but Gymnastics Ireland still can’t accept it and say sorry.”At the time of writing, footage of the incident has been viewed more than 40 million times on X. “What happened on the day should not have happened and for that we are deeply sorry.

Biles, a four-times Olympic champion and 19-times world gold medallist, headlines the five-woman team heading to Antwerp, Belgium, where she won the first of her five world all-around titles in 2013 at the age of 16. Biles will become the first woman to represent the U.S. at six artistic world championships, according to USA Gymnastics, after earning automatic qualification by topping the all-around standings at this week's two-day selection camp in Katy, Texas. She will be joined by Shilese Jones, Leanne Wong and Skye Blakely - all part of the team that won last year's world championships - and 17-year-old Joscelyn Roberson.
